Surviving Comics: A Journey through Comic Book Shop Culture

Comic book enthusiasts and movie buffs, get ready for a thrilling cinematic experience as we embark on a journey through the vibrant world of comic book shops in our upcoming documentary, "Surviving Comics."

Directed by Joe Nicklo and co-directed by Danny Soto, this exciting project takes a deep dive into the fascinating, resilient, and ever-evolving world of comic book shops.

With a talented crew including camera operators Matthew Tucker, Mac Olink, Andy Vidal, and Locksley Lennox, we are excited to bring this captivating story to life.

On our first out of state trip for the Documentary, we had the pleasure of interview long-time Comic Book Retailer, Mitch Cutler, owner of the legendary St. Marks Comics in NYC.

The documentary takes us on a cross-country adventure, where we have visited some of the most iconic comic book shops in the United States. These are not just stores; they are sanctuaries for the comic book community.

Our journey has taken us to St. Marks Comics and Anyone Comics in Brooklyn, NY, Famous Faces & Funnies in Melbourne, FL, Multi-Eisner Spirit Award Finalists Blackbird Comics & Coffeehouse in Maitland, FL, Dr. No's Comics of Georgia, and the oldest comic shop in Florida, A&M Comics. These comic book shops are the lifeblood of the comic book culture, and we are privileged to share their stories.

To kick off production, we interviewed Candice, the Co-Owner of Blackbird Comics & Coffeehouse, a 2-time Eisner Spirit Award Finalist located in Maitland, FL

The Story Behind 'Surviving Comics'

"Surviving Comics" is more than just a documentary about comic book shops; it's a compelling narrative that explores the survival of these shops in the face of corporate giants that publish, sell, and control the very characters and intellectual properties (IPs) that these stores rely on. The documentary highlights the unyielding spirit and determination of comic book shop owners and employees who continue to thrive in an industry dominated by juggernauts.

On our trip to NYC, we spoke with Vincent Zurzolo, the owner and CEO of Metropolis Collectibles.

The film also delves into the positive influence that comic books and the culture surrounding them have on our society. Comic books are more than just colorful pages and masked heroes; they serve as a source of inspiration, empowerment, and a sense of belonging. Through interviews with shop owners, dedicated patrons, and prominent figures in the comic book industry, we uncover how these humble shops have transformed lives and communities.

A legend of Comic Book retail, Cliff Biggers is the owner of Dr. No’s Comics & Games.

The heart of the documentary is a celebration of the comic book culture. We explore the passionate fan base, the artists and writers who breathe life into beloved characters, and the dedication of those who preserve the history and legacy of comic books. From vintage issues to the latest releases, from action figures to cosplay events, "Surviving Comics" captures the vibrant and diverse world of comic book enthusiasts.
